Finally. The end of January and we finally got some decent new music. I get it, it’s slow around the holidays. We’re all trying to rest. I get it, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’ve been in a music deficit. Two things can be true at the same time. Here are my top rankings from last week.
(btw I was out of town and my “On a Flight” playlist really was the perfect touch to my long flights) (see this post if you don’t know what I am talking about)
Through this round of new music, one song stands alone. “Gas Me Up (Diligent)” by Skepta brought me back to life. Brought me fully alive in this year 2024. Wow. This is why I am so on about UK rap because they produce songs like THIS. This is the first good song to come out of 2024.
I really wasn’t sure what to expect from Cole Bennett as he ventured into new territory by releasing an album. He’s known for making killer music videos, but songs? I don’t know… except, now I do know, and he has come through for us. His Lyrical Lemonade project gives us multiple hit songs, but my personal favorite right now is “Stop Giving Me Advice” with Jack Harlow and Dave coming through with sick flows. Jack Harlow really does remind us frequently that he is that guy. He is a good fucking artist. Dave, we already knew he is an amazing artist and lyricist, but let’s rep the UK even more!!! Long Live Dave.
Eminem also came through on this project on the song “Doomsday Pt. 2” and I can’t wait to see him live someday. I don’t know when that will be, but if he performs, I will be there. Period. “Doomsday Pt. 2” follows “Doomsday” which was released in June 2023 with Cordae and Juice Wrld and samples Eminem’s song “Role Model”.
(He’s one of the last artists on my Bucket List, manifesting this to happen next year)
I’ve got to throw in “Sunglasses at Night” by none other than Heidi Klum. Yes, you read that right. She’s honestly pretty good and why I’m really including this song is because of what she has said about it in the media. She speaks so freely and simply. She had this idea, she went after it and found someone to produce it for her (Tiësto) and she brought it to life. She didn’t let the fact that she’s not a singer stop her. She followed her idea from start to finish and that is extremely respectable. She makes the list for this week.
We’ll end this list with new music from BADBADNOTGOOD with their new song “Take What’s Given”. It’s a beautiful and unique and is the type of song you can listen to at any time and it will fit the mood. Its jazzy positivity is subtle enough for a cold Sunday morning but fun enough for laying in some grass on a sunny day. It’s like a hug. It can shape shift into different moods for different occasions.
