Dear Drake,
When Scorpion came out, I played that shit nonstop. I still listen to it, and have a handful of those songs added to my running playlist, which truly is a huge honor in my life. Are you aware that fellow Canadian artist, Lights, covered Side B of Scorpion? Are you also aware that she was forced to remove her covers from all streaming sites? Not cool, dude. What is up with this?!
Plenty of artists cover other artists songs, as I know you know, so why are you like this? Miley Cyrus, Jolene. MisterWives, Same Drugs. Devon Baldwin, Shot for Me. Lion Babe, Hot in Herre. Noah Cyrus, Dunno. Frank Ocean, Moon River. YOU (Drake), 3 On.
Lights took your songs and made them her own. We should be celebrating that! Not hiding it. I know you’ve felt the excitement of covering a song you really love and wanting to share it with your fans. Lights was trying to do just that. She truly loved your work. You talk about empowering women, but you ain’t walking the walk. Are you threatened because her covers sound amazing? Who cares if her covers get streams, you’re fucking Drake! I think you should reconsider this decision and allow these marvelous covers back on streaming sites.
If you haven’t heard them yet, you are in for a treat. Lights’ vocals are sexy and dark, make you feel some type of way. They bring a sense of calmness with a hint of sadness. When I stumbled across these covers, I listened to them on repeat for days, weeks, even. This acoustic version just speaks to me. I know it would speak to other people, too, that’s why I wish they weren’t removed in the first place. These covers were online for about a month and Drake couldn’t handle it. You can only be the best rapper alive, best artist alive, if you have competition. You can’t just box out your competition and think that makes you the best. I know you can’t seriously be concerned about any one, that’s ridiculous. Lights was honoring you. She covered these songs out of love, that’s why they’re so good. She isn’t trying to steal your clout, ok. You should be proud your songs translated so well to an acoustic form. Pure art.
I could go on, but I am going to keep this brief, as I think I have made my point. You are stifling art, and we don’t like it. We are still going to remain your faithful fans even with these covers out. It’s not like it’s Lights vs. Drake. Let us have the cake and eat it, too.
