Day 66. We used to joke about day 48 in my house. It’s hard to wrap my head around all that is going on in the world. Things are bad, sad, and everything in between. If you have spent any part of your quarantine on your phone, you may have seen the many articles about mental health during this time. Mental health is extremely important all the time, but maybe even more right now. But let’s cut to the chase. Listening to music – the easiest way to spend some time on your mental health.
Let me invite you to listen to my recommended quarantine tunes. Guaranteed to stir up some emotions and see reality from a different perspective. Sometimes the best way to feel better is to push through your emotions. Allow yourself to feel. You’ll feel better with a little release. Dance, sing, yell, jump around, shake ya ass, cry, whatever these songs bring out, just go with it.
Tyga & Curtis Roach – Bored in the House
Got to start it off with a banger. Tyga deserves more credit. This man is always a step ahead and knows how to adapt with our ever changing world. Not to mention, he is the king of the popular app TikTok, and you cannot convince me otherwise. This man was making hilarious videos on the app before any other celebrity. He killed it. And then Bored in the House was born. Curtis Roach had started this TikTok sound, Tyga covered it in one of his legendary TikTok videos, and then a collab came about. Tyga knows how to capitalize on trends fast, a superpower of his, and he got to help a fellow rapper along the way. Go, Tyga.
The Neighbourhood ft. G-Eazy – When I get back
If you are missing LA, California, or where ever your home is, this can bring you some nostalgic vibes. Now I have loved this song for so long, but it has a new twist now that quarantine has happened. G-Eazy raps about wanting to spend time at home in his 20’s, but he’s too busy working towards his goals. He mentions his home is “more like an expensive storage unit” but don’t feel bad for him just yet. As fate would have it, he’s getting to spend year 30 at home, and moving to year 31 soon too. (shout out G – happy birthday)
Blackbear ft. 24 Hrs – Moodz
Name someone who’s not moody during this global disaster. I dare you. We all relate to this. Although we’re not going out right now, we will soon, and this song will relate then, too. What is the first outfit y’all are going to wear out? Let me tell you, it depends on my mood. Don’t drink and drive, but this is a fun one to drive too. Ever just go for a drive and listen to music? It’s the updated version of going out. Blast it.
Joyner Lucas – Devil’s Work
This is where the tears come. This song hits me so hard every time. Ugh. The world is not fair sometimes. I cry during this song always. I get angry. I feel so much. This world sucks sometimes. And it’s really hard not to have some kind of vice. It really cuts when he mentions Tr*mp. How can all this bad happen in the world and yet we still have this as a president? How? Gun violence seems never-ending in this country. Overdoses are at an all time high, and depression takes more lives than people care to admit. The mention of Malcom, Trayvon, Nipsey, Sandra, each name rips my heart open more and more. How can all these bad things happen in a supposedly good world? If you’ve lost someone close to you, be prepared for those feelings to come up a little too. It’s honestly a heartbreaking song, but sometimes we just want to be heartbroken.
G-Eazy – Spectacular Now
Keeping with the thought-provoking theme, I give you, G-Eazy. Battles with your internal are always the hardest. Sometimes your biggest obstacle is yourself. It’s hard to remember to have gratitude sometimes. Too easy to get caught up in the small things. I personally love working on myself and doing that internal work to become the best me I can be. I feel like G also enjoys that process. You can hear in this song, he hits deep, his thoughts go deep. There’s a lot of pressure to live your life “right” and this time at home right now, it’s a gift in the sense that we have had the time to evaluate our lives and see if we are living in our truth. It’s time to do the hard things so that you can heal and spend your energy on reaching your goals. I used to work at a job that I absolutely hated, and I carpooled with a guy to work. The morning after this song came out, I needed to play it on the drive to work. Needed. My carpool buddy felt it’s power too. He even texted me months after I left that job to say that he still listens to it and that it’s helped him too. I know so many more people could say the same thing. Hang in there y’all.
maSHerman – Facetime
Facetime or face time? Right now we can really only do one of those things. This song was such an easy choice. It flows. It goes. It’s chill and hype at the same time. This would be an excellent song to smoke to, if we have any smokers in the audience. It will add to the effect. Embrace it. This song is unique. Everything about it was telling me to put it on the list. This is also where I leave you. I hope you find these songs vibe with your quarantine times. Enjoy.
