Get to know Hayley – Update!

Hi! Welcome!

It has been quite some time since I have worked on this blog. Life is complex. People are complex. There is no way you could get to know me and my complexities all at once, but we can start here. Music plays a big role in who I am, so let’s start there.

Let me share with you five songs that fit my vibe. I shared five songs on my first post, and since I am more grown now, I feel I should update my songs too.

My biggest update is that I finally manifested my dream of living in California. I can now walk to the beach every day, and I do. Truly an accomplishing thing to say. Originally from the Midwest, I am thankful to be here every day of my life. Although my job is what allowed me to be able to move, my true passion is music and I am diving deeper into my passion. Why not?

The Carters – Apeshit

If you know me, you know I love Jay-Z. He’s my idol, my hero, my savior, everything. His music competes with itself for best song, album, etc. I weirdly feel connected to him. I love the way he crafts lyrics. A true artist. I have read his book and others written about him, but I hope he writes another one, because I need a life update. Since his last book, Decoded, he has had kids, Lemonade happened, 4:44 happened. So. Much.

As much as I worship Jay, I chose this song by The Carters because, well, frankly, it KILLS. I would lose my mind if I saw this live. So hype. This is part of their story, The Carters album. Lemonade came out, 4:44 follows, Beyonce and Jay-Z both sharing their perspectives, and then they wrap it up with The Carters, a joint album. That journey is just… divine. This song will forever be a classic of theirs. It’s energetic, wild, passion-fueled, strong, and honest. All words I would use to describe myself, too. It’s damn near impossible not to be in a good mood listening. Enjoy.

G-Eazy ft. YG – Endless Summer Freestyle

Naturally, I had to include a G-Eazy song. He is part of my personality. I feel personally responsible for making him popular in the Midwest. Trust me, I was playing his music everywhere in college. I go back and forth with my favorites of his, but this one always touches my soul. G-Eazy songs change with the mood, but this one is continually in rotation.

Let’s be honest, this world is racist as hell. It’s hard to read report after report of this type of violence. The moment Trayvon was killed, this world changed. An outrage started and the fight for justice continues. His case brings up so many emotions to this day, but they did get the media coverage right. Trayvon’s family knew, if they were going to fight for justice, they would need the public’s help. Since then, many others have fought for justice through mass media movements, too. Most recently, Ahmaud Arbery after he was killed in broad daylight. Then we have Breonna Taylor killed by police for doing absolutely nothing wrong. This world is so messed up in some areas and this is one. G-Eazy is known for being from the Bay, and he actually does give back a lot to his community. It’s nice that he can also take time in his lyrics to acknowledge his white privilege and fight for change and justice.

Mac Miller – Missed Calls

A classic. I love Mac Miller, RIP. I will always love this song, I will never get tired of it. Either you’ve been the person calling or you’ve been the person with missed calls, but either way, this song is relatable. Belongs on every break up playlist ever. Maybe I’ll do a whole post for Mac at some point. I could talk about his music for hours. 2011 was a hard year. This song got me through a lot of shit. Mac’s memory and music will live on forever. Repeat this song in his honor.

Kehlani – Get Away

Sing it to me, girl. A track from the OG mixtape of Ms. Kehlani, Cloud 19, soothes the soul as she eases into the chorus. This song has been played on repeat in my car on many occasions. Blasting with the windows down. I turned a lot of my girl friends on to Kehlani with this song. Once you’re here, you might as well listen to the whole mixtape. Let the whole experience over take you for a bit. Thank me later.

Jesse Rutherford – The N Word

No explanation.

Lights – Scorpion Side B Covers

Possibly the best covers ever. For sure the best covers of Drake ever. No question. Drake knows it too, that’s why they are almost impossible to find. They’ve been taken off almost every site, but I happen to have a friend that emailed me them. Bless. I had heard them before they got taken down, but I’m pretty sure they were only on music streaming sites for a day or two. It was quick. I was sad. But alas, I have them forever now.

These are the only three songs I could find. Hit me up if you want the full set. Drake, please, let these covers be heard! I will cover this topic in further detail at a later date. stay tuned.
