Start to get to know me, by getting to know my music. I have chosen a handful of songs that I would like to represent me, and I have to say, they are pretty fucking accurate.
Let’s get to it.
verbatim – blackbear
If you have no idea who Blackbear is, you should educate yourself right now. I cannot get enough of his music, which is why he ended up with the first spot on my list. I resonate more with good lyrics rather than a good beat, and this song is right up my alley. I love people who speak their minds and say how they feel even when it can get hard or uncomfortable. I strive to do that as well. Blackbear really puts it all out on the table in a majority of his songs and he always says how he feels. Respect it.
And this is specifically to the man himself, remember when you came to Omaha but then cancelled your show the day of, with no notice but a sign on the door when we got there? Yah, I’m going to need you to come back and make that up soon. Thanks.
GIRLS @ – Joey Purp ft. Chance the Rapper
Joey Purp has big things coming for 2017, I am sure of it. I would say a lot of my friends would describe me as weird and fun and that’s probably why I chose this song. You can’t not dance to it, hence the lyric, “When they hear this jam, they can’t sit still.” Trust me when I say, there is no better feeling than jamming out while getting ready and yelling “Where the tall girls at? You bad!” along with Chance the Rapper. Maybe that’s the true reason I chose this song. Don’t worry if you’re not tall, girls, as they also shout out small and mid-sized girls. Props to all girls. I think everyone can and should appreciate this song. Turn it up when you turn it on.
Note: Do yourself a favor and also watch the music video. It’s wild.
Another Note: Chance probably should have had his own song on my list, but you try to pick 5 songs that represent you and see if you can fit everything you want. A feature will just have to do for now.
Back To Back Freestyle – Drake
Let me just start by saying, OF COURSE Drake is on my list! Drake is top dog. If not in your eyes, definitely in my eyes, and since I run this blog, Drake is top dog. If you can name your favorite Drake song, props to you. It is impossible for me. I chose Back To Back because I can never ever EVER get enough diss tracks in my life. I literally laugh out loud at some of his songs because the digs are just too fire, he is roasting them. Naturally, I love all his music because if I’m not in the mood for diss tracks, I am definitely in my feels. Drake and I are basically the same person. To say I am eagerly anticipating his new album would be an understatement. Until then, I will just listen to his quick-witted lyrics back to back.
Vengeance On My Mind – G-Eazy
For those of you that already know me, you have probably heard me talk about G-Eazy before. I would personally like to take majority, no, okay just some, okay a lot of responsibility for spreading his music all across Omaha. Everywhere I went, I was blasting him from my car, stealing the aux cord at parties an annoying amount and sharing his albums on social media. So you’re welcome, Omaha. Now we all know how fucking great he is. As much as I love G’s older music and the style it had, I have loved seeing him transition and flourish as an artist and continue to support his new music (shout out to the haters that complain “he’s changed”) (duh, it’s called growth). This is one of his latest tracks and it gets me so hype. His words are so sharp, I can feel his dedication to his craft through my speakers. G is here to stay and makes that well known in this track. G-Eazy has been hustling hard since day one, even after 10 years he only raps harder and explores a genre of music in ways many artists cannot manage.
Eazy Season is here, people.
Table – Kehlani ft. Little Simz
The first time I saw Kehlani, it was love at first sight. I had been listening to her music for a few months then, but her voice was otherworldly at this show. With every song she has put out since, I have only loved her more. She has pure raw talent and she is always speaking some kind of truth! Her music exudes confidence, her words have focused energy behind them and you can dance to, seriously, every single track. Kehlani pairing with Little Simz on this track just added more genius behind the lyrics. If you ever need to improve your mood, just turn on her music.
Her next album, SweetSexySavage, is due out January 27, 2017, and will definitely be badass. Check out The Hub shortly after, that album will definitely be covered!
